Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra

We are so happy and proud to announce that a first has happened at Newton’s Grove School.

Grade 12 clarinetist, Michael Husu has been accepted as one of the 3 clarinetists into the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra! For more than 45 seasons, the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (TSYO) has provided a high-level orchestral experience for talented young musicians aged 22 and under. The TSYO has a close affiliation with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO): TSO musicians serve as coaches through the season, TSO guest artists lead masterclasses for TSYO members, and the TSYO performs annually with the TSO in a side-by-side concert at Roy Thomson Hall.

The Youth Orchestra’s affiliation with the TSO has resulted in several exciting masterclasses led by world-renowned guest artists and conductors. Recent guests include:

  • Trumpeter: Alison Balsom, Wynton Marsalis
  • Cellist: Alisa Weilerstein, Yo-Yo Ma
  • Violinists: James Ehnes, Pinchas Zukerman, Maxim Vengerov
  •  Violinist, conductor, and composer: Pekka Kuusisto,
  •  Trombonist: Christian Lindberg
  • Conductors: James Gaffigan, Stéphane Denève, Sir Andrew Davis

The Youth Orchestra has toured extensively within Canada and abroad. Tour destinations have included Banff, British Columbia, the Canadian Arctic, Quebec, Texas, Massachusetts, California, Japan, and Europe.

Michael, we are so proud of the incredible musical steps you have taken!

From the entire NGS student body and staff, congratulations!
