States of Matter Academics To wrap up their States of Matter Unit in Science, the grade two students worked together in partners or groups of three to design and build a strong and sturdy boat made from three simple materials: aluminum foil, plastic straws, and masking tape. The goal was for each boat to float and carry weight. Students tested the durability of the boats by holding a challenge to see which boat could stay afloat while holding the largest amount of coins! After the challenge, students reflected on what worked well, and what improvements they could make to their boat design if they were to complete the assignment again. The grade two students really enjoyed this fun and engaging hands-on activity! Here are photos of the grade two engineers at work and their finished masterpieces!
