Celebrating Black Heritage Month with Author Amaya James Community, Events, Wellness Newton’s Grove School is honored to kick off Black Heritage Month with a special visit from young author, illustrator and speaker, Amaya James. Amaya’s book, Afro, No! explores the sometimes complicated relationship that young black girls can have with their hair. It is a perfect way to kick off February, a month dedicated to the celebration of diversity, history, and culture of Black people in Canada. In addition to exploring the themes of her book, Amaya will interact with students by way of an informative Q&A session. This will allow students to ask Amaya such questions as what her creative process looks like, discuss the experiences that have led to her becoming a published author, and more. This exciting event is part of our broader Black Heritage Month celebrations, which include various educational activities and discussions designed to honor the contributions, achievements, and rich cultural heritage of the Black community. This includes welcoming another guest speaker, @powerinequity, to bring another powerful message to our students later this month. During the month of February and beyond, we look forward to offering students opportunities and experiences that positively contribute to our richly diverse school culture where all students can see themselves represented and celebrated.
