Celebrating Sportsmanship and Unity at Our Olympic Day Event Athletics, Events Our recent Olympic Day event was a resounding success, filled with fun, camaraderie, and exhilarating competition. This annual event, eagerly anticipated by students and staff alike, showcased the incredible spirit and athleticism of our school community, not to mention our school theme for the 2023/2024 school year – JOY! A Global Celebration From the moment the event began, the energy was palpable. Students teamed up to represent different countries, each donning colorful attire and waving their respective flags with pride. This year’s Olympic Day truly felt like a global celebration, with each team embracing the spirit of their chosen countries. Friendly Competitions The day kicked off with a series of friendly – but highly competitive – games, featuring a variety of sports that tested both skill and teamwork. Soccer matches were intense, with students displaying impressive footwork and strategic plays. The capture the flag games were equally thrilling, with students darting across the fields, dodging opponents, and executing daring flag captures. The cheers from the sidelines were deafening as classmates and teachers cheered on their teams, fostering an atmosphere of unity and support. A BBQ Brunch The day was punctuated by a mid-morning BBQ brunch of hamburgers and hotdogs which were thoroughly enjoyed by all the athletes. The pause in the day’s pace gave all participants time to catch up on the scores and take part in some friendly banter as everyone prophetically claimed the Olympic Day trophy for their team, while eager to resume the competitions. The Ultimate Relay Race As the competitions ensued, anticipation built for the event everyone was talking about: the relay race. This wasn’t just any relay race—it was the most exciting and closely contested race the school had seen for the day, with a student representing every division – Junior, Middle, and Senior Schools – as well as a staff representative on each relay team. Students lined the track, eager to witness the head-to-head competition. To everyone’s delight, the staff representation spanned the breadth of faculty, from the head of Extended Programming (Mr. Scott Wheler) to the Senior School Principal (Mrs. Eva Diab) to the Head of School (Mrs. Cheri Grogan) joining the race, trading their work shoes for sprinting shoes. The sight of our principals and teachers, who are usually seen in more formal roles, sprinting down the track in head-to-head athletic combat was nothing short of exhilarating. Their enthusiasm and competitive spirit were infectious, and they left the crowd in awe with their speed and agility, and most of all Newton’s Grove heart and spirit. A Day to Remember Olympic Day was more than just a day of sports; it was a celebration of sportsmanship, teamwork, and school spirit. It brought together students, teachers, and staff in a unique way, strengthening the bonds within our community. The memories made and the lessons learned—about perseverance, teamwork, and the joy of participation—will surely stay with us all. Looking Forward The ultimate victors of the day was Team USA with Team Brazil claiming a close second. And even in the midst of all the celebratory festivities, the entire community was already looking forward to next year’s Olympic Day, inspired by the incredible success, joy and raw energy of this year’s event. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making this event so very unforgettable. Here’s to many more years of Olympic spirit and school unity! Stay tuned for more exciting events and opportunities to showcase the amazing talents and spirit of our Newton’s Grove community. Go team!
