Honouring the Rich Heritage of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples: National Indigenous Peoples Day 2025 Uncategorized Although the academic year has come to a close, at Newton’s Grove School, we remain committed to learning, reflection, and celebration — especially as we mark National Indigenous Peoples Day on Saturday, June 21, 2025. This day offers an important opportunity for our school community to recognize and honour the deep-rooted history, vibrant cultures, and enduring contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada. A Day for Reflection, Learning, and Celebration National Indigenous Peoples Day is more than a date on the calendar — it is a call to listen, to learn, and to engage meaningfully with the stories, knowledge systems, and traditions that have existed on this land for generations. This year, we encourage our students, staff, and families to take the time to: Explore Indigenous art, music, and literature — from oral storytelling to contemporary works, Indigenous creators offer powerful insights into history, identity, and resilience. Participate in community events — many cities and towns host powwows, cultural demonstrations, and public ceremonies that celebrate Indigenous heritage. Reflect on the land we share — consider whose traditional territory we reside on and how we can support Indigenous sovereignty, stewardship, and rights. Continue our journey of reconciliation — education is an essential part of reconciliation. And although we have come to the end of the 2024/2025 academic year, we encourage everyone in our community to continue their education about, not only the contributions of Indigenous Peoples, but also the ways we can continue to honour their rich diversity, history, and culture. A Lasting Commitment While National Indigenous Peoples Day is one day in the year, the celebration and recognition of Indigenous cultures and communities must be ongoing. As we look ahead to the next school year, we renew our commitment to building respectful relationships, amplifying Indigenous voices, and fostering an environment where every student is encouraged to learn with humility and purpose. On June 21st, we invite everyone to pause, reflect, and celebrate the incredible diversity and richness of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples — today and every day.
