Interview: Young Seo

How did you become a teacher at Newton’s Grove School?

I became a teacher at Newton’s Grove School after graduating from the Ontario Institute of Education in 2009. I originally interviewed for a Supply Teacher position teaching Grade 9/10 math and civics/careers courses, but the Head of School, Paul Edwards, offered me a part-time math teaching position instead—and I’ve been here ever since!

What is your favourite part about teaching math?

What I love about teaching math is seeing students grasp challenging concepts and then use that understanding to solve more complex problems. It’s incredibly fulfilling to help them bridge the gap between abstract ideas and practical applications.

What was your favourite subject at school?

My two favourite subjects in high school were math and music. While I’m no professional, I enjoyed playing the piano and clarinet in my free time until life got busier. A while back—before I had my own kids—Mr. Alonso gave me the opportunity to join the senior band here at Newton’s Grove, and it was such a blast! Playing in the band required a lot of practice and dedication, but it was absolutely worth it when we came together and sounded like a professional orchestra.

Many may know already that you are a coffee aficionada. This may help score some points for your students what is your favourite way of having your coffee (espresso, slow-drip, latte, etc)?
I LOVE all kinds of coffee in any form, but if I had to rank them, it would be latte, slow-drip, and then espresso.

What is one of the things you love most about working at Newton’s Grove School?

I love the people I work with here—they are all so kind and supportive! Everyone is always willing to help and ensure you’re never left to handle challenges alone. Whenever I have a problem, I know I can turn to any of my colleagues for assistance without fear of judgment. I also love the students I get to teach every year. Our students are eager to learn and impress us with their dedication and hard work. It is truly rewarding to witness their growth.

In the vein of our school year theme of Gratitude, what are you grateful for this school year?

This goes back to what I said above; This school year, I am deeply grateful for the incredible people I work with at NGS. I have a true appreciation for the leadership team, who genuinely listen to our concerns and support us through challenges, making our work more manageable and fulfilling. That support is a big reason why I’m still here! I’m also incredibly thankful that I get to work at the same school my children attend. Seeing them wanting to go to school every morning and love their school makes this experience even more special. I know how rare this opportunity is for teacher-moms, and I don’t take it for granted!
