Celebrating Excellence in Music at Newton’s Grove School Music Lessons At Newton’s Grove School, music is more than a program – it is an integral part of how students learn, create, and express themselves. Recent accomplishments from our talented musicians highlight the strength of our Signature Music Program and the dedication that drives our students to achieve at an exceptional level. We are proud to recognize Salma and Japman, who were selected to participate in the Ontario Provincial Honour Band, an ensemble that brings together 80 of the top high school musicians from across the province. Admission is highly competitive and based on individual audition, making their achievement especially meaningful. Over four intensive days, students took part in rehearsals, workshops, and performances led by Dr. Travis Cross from the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. The experience included collaborations with world-class clarinet soloist Michele Jacot and culminated in a series of inspiring concerts at the Ontario Music Educators’ Association Conference. The rehearsal camp, held at the Salvation Army Shoreline Camp in Jackson’s Point along the shores of Lake Simcoe, offered an immersive environment for musical growth and connection. Bravo, Salma and Japman, on this exceptional accomplishment. We also extend our congratulations to the seven Newton’s Grove musicians who performed on Friday, November 28 at the Meridian Centre for the Arts with the prestigious Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra. Joined by two alumni, these students took to the stage with one of the top wind ensembles in North America. The evening showcased their talent, discipline, and artistry. We are incredibly proud of each student who represented our school with such skill and passion. These achievements are rooted in the depth and structure of our Signature Music Program. From their earliest years, students at Newton’s Grove learn to read music and are introduced to both choral and solo singing. In Grade 5, they begin their journey in our Instrumental Band Program, where they develop the technical knowledge and discipline required to grow as musicians. As students progress into Middle School, they may be invited to join our Enriched Program or earn a reach-ahead credit in Grade 9 Music – an opportunity that supports both their musical and academic advancement. In Senior School, students can explore Jazz Band, specialized ensembles, and Advanced Musicianship courses, broadening their skills and deepening their understanding of performance. Each year, our Arts and Music Nights celebrate these efforts, bringing together bands, choirs, and soloists in performances that consistently exceed expectations for musicians of their age. Together with remarkable displays of visual art from across the grades, these evenings highlight the creativity and dedication that flourish within our arts community. At its core, our program is built on the belief that the arts should inspire, challenge, and support each student. Through engaging instruction and a warm, encouraging environment, students feel confident stepping outside their comfort zones, trying new instruments, and pushing their abilities further than they imagined. We applaud all of our musicians for their hard work, artistry, and commitment. Their achievements reflect the vibrant, collaborative, and enriching music community at Newton’s Grove School.
