National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Academics, Citizenship In Canada, more than 150, 000 First Nations, Metis and Inuit children attended Indigenous Residential Schools between the late 1800s and 1996. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honors the bravery and resilience of residential school survivors. Over the next few weeks (and beyond), the Newton’s Grove community will be reflecting on ideas surrounding education, inclusiveness, and support. On September 30th, 2021, Newton’s Grove School held an Orange Shirt Day in support of Indigenous Peoples. They participated in age-appropriate activities that celebrate resilience, reconciliation and affirm a commitment that every child matters. Students honoured the memory of Indigenous children who attended Residential Schools by taking a moment to reflect and tie a ribbon to our front gate to symbolize these children. Donations in support of The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund were collected.
