The National Youth Band Arts We would like to give a huge congratulations to Michael (Grade 11) for being accepted as First Chair Clarinetist in the 2021 National Youth Band of Canada! In order to be selected. Michael had to submit audition pieces and technical requirements that demonstrated his highest level of skill! The National Youth Band is a music education youth project offered by the Canadian Band Association. Selected members ranging in age from 16-22 will be meeting virtually to practice together, conduct virtual performances, and create recordings. The NYB will wrap up on May 3, 2021. Michael has been playing his clarinet since elementary school. Michael enjoys the challenge and emotional connection that instrumental music has offered him and looks forward to being able to collaborate and be part of a virtual ensemble. “I am honoured to be selected as Principal Chair of the National Youth Band of Canada. Working with talented musicians and an extraordinary faculty I know will inspire my passion for music. Not only does this opportunity help me as a musician but also as a leader.” We couldn’t be prouder of Michael. As his band teacher, I know the hard work, talent, and dedication it takes to be selected by the NYB. To top it off, to be selected First Chair, speaks volumes of his talent. First Chair is a position of distinction that goes to the most competent player and leader. The First Chair is also a leader of the section. In Michael’s case, the entire clarinet section will take their cues and direction on inflection, dynamics, etc., from him. The skill level Michael demonstrated in the audition material was so impressive and inspiring. I know he will represent Newton’s Grove School with pride. Congratulations, Michael!
